Canadian society has already labeled the proposal as a political spectacle. But the head of a major Canadian province, standing on the side of the road, just didn’t pound his fist on the table, saying: “The tunnel be!”
Doug Ford, Ontario’s premier, has announced an ambitious plan to rid Toronto of traffic jams. The idea is to build an expressway under Canada’s busiest highway, Highway 401. The high-profile politician’s plans are also confirmed by a document on the provincial government’s website.
The press release says the highway would provide a faster route for the busiest roads in the province north of Toronto, from Brampton and Mississauga in the west to Markham and Scarborough in the east. But there’s a long road of consultation, engineering and most importantly, project miscalculation ahead. For now, neither Ford nor anyone else can even guess how much the underground artery will cost or whether they’ll have the money to build it.
